So I have been absent from blogging for a little while, adjusting to the new job and the impending approach of autumn (which for those involved in either the church or collegiate spheres is a very busy time). One thing of note during this time was going to the Over the Rhine concert at The Triple Door. I wouldn't say I'm a newbie to Over the Rhine, I've known about and listened to their music for 4 years now, but this was my first concert and it was amazing. Detweiler and Bergquist make an amazing team, crafting beautiful music with exquisitely nuanced lyrics. Their ability to connect with their audience was spot on, weaving personal reminiscence and humor in a genuinely authentic manner that drew the audience in to each song.
I've been to alot of concerts over the last few years and I've found that a band or musician's ability to connect with their audience beyond just being there to play music can not only help a fan to better understand their music and influences, but can move someone from the periphery of the periodic iPod listener to a lover of their music. I have been to concerts that were litteraly clock watching yawners, but I have also been to much more memorable concerts, in small, cramped, often a little too warm venues that have moved me from an appreciator to an avid friend and exponent of their entire oeuvre of music. Over the Rhine now makes that list. Check out their newest work, The Trumpet Child, but don't stop there...I am still discovering more about them as I work my way back through their discography.
